Remote, Octagon & Lowry, 2022 (Youth Theatre)

A girl called Antler steps out of her front door and throws her phone on the ground. She stamps on it. She then climbs the tallest tree in the park. She doesn’t want to be found, not by anyone. Seven teenagers’ lives all intertwine over the course of a single evening as they make their way through the park on a seemingly normal Autumn’s night. Remote is a play about protest, power and protecting yourself.

An ensemble piece that fluidly interwove character driven scenes with choral voice and used movement choreography and a mix of high-energy rave and reflective acoustic tracks to articulate the wild mood swings of young people on the brink of an uncertain adult future.

Remote was performed by the sixteen members of Young Octagon, the Octagon Theatre’s performance company that develops excellence in young actors aged 13 – 19. It was part of the National Theatre’s nationwide Connections festival, performed over three shows at the Octagon Theatre Studio and the Lowry Aldridge Studio.

The subject, form and scale of my work varies significantly but throughout is a desire to relate to audiences and participants as citizens not consumers.
